# Free Field: What Is a Free Field Audiometry Test?

> Free Field Audiometry A free field audiometry test allows clinicians to test pure tones without the use of on-ear transducers. Instead, the audiologist uses a speaker. the clinic an option for assessing individuals who are unable to wear headphones of any description.

# What is **Free Field Testing?**

Free field audiometry allows clinicians to test pure tones and speech stimuli without the use of headphones or other on ear transducers. This can be useful for not only individuals who are unable to wear headphones, but for validating hearing aids as well. During free field audiometry, instead of headphones, the sounds are presented via a speaker placed in front of the patient.

## Why Use Free Field?

Free field measurements are often used with pediatric patients or patients with additional needs. Although ear specific data is preferable, free field audiometry provides clinicians with data on the individuals better hearing ear.

Free field measures can also be used when a client is wearing hearing devices to provide an indicator of a client's response to sound where[REM](https://www.auditdata.com/audiology-solutions/measure/hearing-instrument-fitting/real-ear-measurement/ "Real Ear Measurement") or RECD targets are unable to be met. Even if targets are met, free field measures can validate these objective measures with behavioral responses.

## How to Perform Testing Using Free Field Presentation?

When performing Free Field Audiometry, the speaker simply replaces the headset. The speaker should be placed at the same height as the patient’s head at a distance of at least one meter. Just as when using headphones, sound is presented, and the patient is instructed to response in a developmentally appropriate way. Pure tones or speech stimuli, such as when testing SRT and/or WRS, can be used.
